I Did Not Leave a Comment on Your Blog or Forum
If you’ve arrived at this blog by clicking on a link in a comment left on your own blog or a comment left in a forum (a comment supposedly left by me) then I’m sorry to tell you that you have been deceived – but not by me.
I rarely leave comments on blogs other than my own.
I have not left a comment on anyone’s blog other than my own for at least six months.
I have never placed a comment in a forum.
Someone is impersonating me
Doodee’s Thailand usually receives a few hundred hits per week. During the last twenty four hours it has received over four hundred hits, and most of them are coming from comments sections on a multitude of other blogs (I have not left comments on any blogs other than my own during the last six months) and from forum postings (none of which have been made by me).
Likewise my own comments section is being swamped with messages mostly saying, “Thank you for your comment left on my blog” – but I haven’t left any comments on any blogs for longer than I can remember.
I’m sorry to have repeated myself in the above paragraphs, but I want to be sure that no-one could possibly misunderstand what I’m saying here.
I have no idea as to why this bizarre situation has arisen. I’ll do my best to keep you updated on developments.

UPDATE – An Excellent Idea (Sunday 3rd February): Flyer has left an excellent suggestion in this entry's comments section as to how this spammer might be defeated. But information about the incoming spam will need to be provided. I don’t have the relevant information because I’m not receiving these spam comments. If you are receiving these spam comments it might be helpful if you would follow Flyer’s advice. It looks to me like it’s worth a try. Flyer’s comment and advice is the twenty first comment in the list. Please take a look at it.
UPDATE (Monday 4th February): Alex has left some interesting advice in the comments list. His comments are the thirty ninth and fortieth in the list.
Re How to block spam comments on Blogger and Blogspot Blogs: Use word verification, as I do. You will find the control button for word verification in Settings/Comments.
I thank all of you for your comments and your support. And I give special thanks to those of you who are offering constructive suggestions that hopefully will help bring this matter to a conclusion.
UPDATE (Friday 8th February): The spam related hits to this blog have been steadily decreasing since Monday, and as a consequence the spam related comments have decreased significantly too. The figures for both items stand at less than ten percent of what they were only six days ago. I hesitate to read too much into only a few day’s figures, but even so I see recent developments as an indication that this spamming episode is drawing to a close. Let’s hope that’s the case.
I recently received a comment from a reader in which he gave a name, postal address, Email address and telephone number for the spammer. I cannot publish this comment without positive and absolute verification - to do so would be very irresponsible. And anyway, if the spammer has stopped or been stopped then I see no point in publishing such information. I see this entire odd spamming affair as insignificant and trivial. I prefer to draw a line under it at the earliest opportunity.
I’ve also received a comment which stated that the spammer’s domain registration was provided by “GoDaddy”. I don’t know whether or not this information is useful to those of us whose otherwise quiet lives have been interrupted by this spammer’s activities.
Once again, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who’ve been so helpful and supportive.
I’ll post to this blog again soon.

Seeing as how I came via a comment you did not leave, I figured I can maybe help you a little.. the IP with which the comment was receieved is 89.179.88.7 and the e-mail is Rorraratterse@highrelevantsearch.com
Now the IP points too a site called ripe (http://www.ripe.net) and the e-mail is oddly a realty company in florida. WEIRD, indeed. Must be a spammer >__< Goodluck =]

Thanks for the heads up. I finally banned the IP address it was coming from because I was getting about 75-100 a day from "you" visiting my site and leaving comments.

I'm one such person who received a comment, although it got shunted right into my spam filter. The e-mail address provided by the person impersonating you is Nippraign@highrelevantsearch.com, and their IP is 89.179.91.229. Hope that can be of some use to you in getting them to stop. Good luck.

Ok, in that case I'm here for nothing ;) I'll look up the IP number next time. I just deleted it several times.

Thanks for posting this. I am one who has gotten about 15 comments from "you" that all say "Thanks for sharing."
I've blocked the IP address they've come from but somehow that didn't work.
I was kinda steamed at you for doing it, but now I see it's not really you. Hope you can figure it out. :)

Hi, I've received a post in my blog from the ones who are impersonating you... The data from the wordpress email is as follows:
Author : Doodee (IP: 89.179.91.229 , 89.179.91.229)
E-mail : NeceSooge@highrelevantsearch.com

Interesting. It's a variation on the spam comment that I've not come across before, although I have seen email accounts taken over and used by spammers. It took a few of the repeated comments for me to decide that this had to stop and it was pure chance that I decided to have a look at the originating URL. I'm glad I did - you have a well written and interesting blog.
Which leaves me with the problem: do I block future allegedly Doodee comments or do I let them accumulate, knowing that they will lead the occasional reader to a pretty good blog? It's a difficult one...
By
Clive, at 5:19 AM
Thanks for the info. A suspiciously vague comment was posted to my blog and the email address seemed like it belonged to a "marketing" website. I'll mark the comment as spam.
By
Callipygian, at 8:22 AM
I came here for that very reason - a comment posted on my blog. It got snagged up by the spam filters, and I wondered if it was mistakenly labeled spam. Turns out it wasn't.
I did like the post about the tour buses and their amazing paint jobs though.

I accidentally deleted the first 50 or so comments. I apologise to all of you who left comments and don't see them published here now. If you'd like to resend them I'll publish them.
Many commenters have been both very sympathetic very helpful. I thank you for that.
I will reply to commenters and Emailers as soon as I have the time, but right at this moment I'm snowed under with all the additional and otherwise unnecessary work that this most unwelcome spammer is causing me.
At the moment I don't see what I can do to curtail this spammer's activities.
The following comments are the ones that I have received most recently. The comments that I accidentally deleted broadly reflected similar points of view.
I'll comment again soon.
All the best from

lol I came over to say stop spamming my blog. Thanks for posting. No problem, I understand. It has happened to others. Akismet catches them. But they, as all spam are a huge PITA.
The info from the latest:
Farradyappown@highrelevantsearch.com | doodeesthailand.blogspot.com | IP: 89.179.70.131
Maybe there is some way to report them.

Sorry about your trouble.
The info I was going to leave is identical to what punk left.
Many of us that use wordpress control our comment spam with a registry called askimet. It caught the comment. I hope this does not limit your commenting abilities.

RIPE isn't the company, it's the IP address organization for Europe (like ARIN is in the US).
If you search the RIPE whois you find that it's a Russian broadband IP:
inetnum: 89.179.64.0 - 89.179.79.255
netname: CORBINA-BROADBAND
descr: Broadband customers in St. Perersburg
country: RU

tech-c: CORB1-RIPE
status: ASSIGNED PA "status:" definitions
mnt-by: RU-CORBINA-MNT
mnt-lower: RU-CORBINA-MNT

I'm guessing he's trying to "promote" the "highrelevantsearch" site and just uses your site as filler to make his spam comments look real.
You could consider sending emails to abuse@corbina.net with the ip and timestamps of some comments.

Nah, just kidding. My site received a comment from 'you' too. But went straight to the spam section.

Quite strange actually. All it had was:
Thanks for sharing
These things really piss me off. Whoever impersonated you is making no sense at all.

Hi Doodee and all.
I'm also another unfortunate recipient of this idiot's handiwork. His comments always get caught in moderation as that's the way my blog is set up. But although I've placed him on the black list, he still gets through that. Obviously a hacker who can get into the alterable configurations on websites (as opposed to the setup your website comes with).
So banning this idiot does no good unfortunately. If anybody figures out what to do about him, please post it here.
THnx.

I keep getting the spam comments too. Hope you can sort it out soon!

You poor guy .. this is the most annoying kind of spam I have yet seen .... I had one of 'your' comments yesterday ... and 3 more today ... IP again is 89.179.71.229
Hope this will get sorted out sometime soon, for your sanity's sake.

Hello doodee and all the others, who got spammed. I got spammed too more than once. But all the comments have the same IP: 89.179.71.229 like many here who answered to this post.
There should be another way to block this comments, but you need access to your server. So if you have a blog on blogspot.com or blogger.com, I don't know how to solve it. But if you have your "own" server or access to a server, do these steps:
Create or open your .htaccess - file on your root-folder. (Search at Google/Wikipedia/selfhtml.org for .htaccess, if you don't know, what it is)
Write this line in there: "deny from 89.179.71.229" and save your .htaccess - file. Now the user with the IP 89.179.71.229 will be blocked and get a Error 500, if he tries to watch your site. I did this already to a different IP where I got spam-hammered from and it worked fine.
If you need help, feel free to ask me at my contact formular on my blog. May be I will set up a post to describe it one more time there.
Greetings and spamfree blogging! :-) Alex

By the way: I don't think, that any of this emailaddresses are working. They are, like flyer said, only for advertising this highrelevantsearch-thing. But, do not check this out, otherwise the spammer has reached his target ...

I'm sorry you have to deal with that kind of situation. :/

Sorry you are going through this!

Hi, I got spammed as well.
The IP was 89.179.88.72
So it seams they are using IPs starting with 89,179,88.xxx
I cant give any advice as I use WP, not Blogger. But "you" got caught in my spam filter. Now I will report this IP to Akismet, so hopefully "your" comments will be auto deleted from my blog from now on.
Good luck in your spam catching quest. I feel for you, it really sucks. I had big problems before, as someone used my server to spam. Still have problems from that once in a while as some software sees me as a spammer...
By
GuavaJuice, at 8:20 AM
Hehe, I just saw that Aksimet caught around 100 spam comments from you at my blog. Dont know why one slipped through...
By
GuavaJuice, at 8:23 AM
Ha, this is hilarious. Well, enjoy all the hits! I don't think I'd mind if some spammer was doing it for free for me! I am yet another person who was hit with it, but luckily Akismet caught it.

lol, I was just stopping by to give you a piece of my mind when I spotted this post!
Sorry to hear that you've been connected with such a persistent spammer. If anything, you at least got a surge of free traffic from it.
The comments left on my blog originated from the same IP left by others above.

Update Saturday 23rd February 2008:
Thanks to everyone for your comments and your help.
This entire affair still remains a mystery to me, but I won’t lose any sleep over it. The spammer appears now to have pretty much curtailed his/her activities. I see this matter as concluded.
With the benefit of hindsight it seems most likely to me that the hits to this blog which originated from forums were probably genuine. I suspect that they were generated by discussions resulting from the spammer’s activities, but not from somebody impersonating me as I previously thought. But the hits from blog comments sections were all generated by the spammer. So be it.
Once again I thank you all for your kindness, your understanding, your friendship, and your help.
All the best from
Doodee
